I am opposed to actions that are tantamount to vandalism, but I certainly applaud TEAL for its spirit. I hope they are going after those apostrophes that are being used to form plurals, i.e., "turkey's" instead of "turkeys." It seems to me that one person made this error 15 years ago, and thousands of people decided to copy it.

Up to a point I have some sympathy for the TEAL folks. I'm a teacher and English major, and I am frequently appalled by the horrible writing I see in the work of my students and in the average sign on the streets these days. There was a flower shop in my town that went for years with the notice that they “selled bokays.” It made me want to creep up there in the middle of the night and...

However, I must point out that in my opinion illegally defacing public signs, in particular an antique in a national park, screams of the utmost intellectual snobbery and arrogance. I went as far as mentioning how silly the sign looked to the store owner, and it was eventually corrected. That's the only approach that works. Any other will just turn people off completely to the whole idea, as well it should. It’s one thing to rail, and rightly so, against the erosion of language standards. It’s another thing entirely to do it in such a manner. It’s no wonder so many people have an instinctive dislike of “intellectuals” like this.
