However, I must point out that in my opinion illegally defacing public signs, in particular an antique in a national park, screams of the utmost intellectual snobbery and arrogance. I went as far as mentioning how silly the sign looked to the store owner, and it was eventually corrected. That’s the only approach that works. Any other will just turn people off completely to the whole idea, as well it should. It’s one thing to rail, and rightly so, against the erosion of language standards. It’s another thing entirely to do it in such a manner. It’s no wonder so many people have an instinctive dislike of “intellectuals” like this.
